Korean Word Order Guide for TOPIK I
A beginner-friendly guide to arranging Korean sentence parts in TOPIK I style practice.
The simple rule
Korean sentences usually place the verb or adjective at the end. For TOPIK I learners, the safest practice is to first find the final action, then arrange the topic, time, place, and object before it.
Common beginner patterns
1. Topic + time + object + verb
저는 + 오늘 + 커피를 + 마셔요.
A simple TOPIK I sentence often starts with the topic, then adds time, object, and the final verb.
2. Place with 에서
동생은 + 도서관에서 + 책을 + 읽어요.
Use 에서 when an action happens at a place. This is common in reading and listening questions.
3. Existence with 에 and 있어요
가방 안에 + 지갑이 + 있어요.
Use 에 for location and 있어요 to say that something exists there.
4. Reason with -아서/어서
날씨가 좋아서 + 산책해요.
The reason comes first, and the result or action comes after it.
5. Future plan with -ㄹ/을 거예요
저는 내일 친구를 만날 거예요.
This beginner future form is useful for schedules, plans, and daily routines.
How to check your answer
- Check whether the verb or adjective is at the end.
- Check whether time and place words are attached to the right particles.
- Read the sentence aloud once. If it feels too long, split the idea into two simple clauses.
- Review missed questions by grammar pattern, not only by the final answer.
